1. Rich middle-aged women with no jobs or other meaningful way to occupy their time, who descend on upscale cafes around lunchtime to hang out with each other more because they have nothing better to do than because they like the company. Generally despised by cafe workers.
2. Slim, well-off, old-money, well-dressed women who meet for lunch socially, normally during the working day.
3. A group of three or more girl friends who compulsively hang out but who barely know or like each other.
4. Women who have been made redundant who don’t know what to do next.

It feels like the company is a vast cruise liner with bright lights and soon I will be seeing it from the distance rather than being on it. That made me feel depressed until I realised that ships come along all the time. I don’t have to choose a bleak hulk just because it’s there – I can wait till a friendly boat comes along. See – optimism abounds.

Today’s fast-paced media could be making us indifferent to human suffering and should allow time for us to reflect, according to researchers. They found that emotions linked to moral sense are slow to respond to news and events and have failed to keep up with the modern world.

In the time it takes to fully reflect on a story of anguish and suffering, the news bulletin has already moved on or the next Twitter update is already being read.

As activities such as reading books and meeting friends, where people can define their morals, are taken over by news snippets and fast-moving social networking, the problem could become widespread, researchers warn.

Children could be particularly vulnerable because their brains are still developing.

“If things are happening too fast, you may not ever fully experience emotions about other people’s psychological states and that would have implications for your morality,” said Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, from the University of Southern California, and one of the researchers.

Dr Aric Sigman says websites such as Facebook set out to enrich social lives, but end up keeping people apart.

Dr Sigman makes his warning in Biologist, the journal of the Institute of Biology.

A lack of “real” social networking, involving personal interaction, may have biological effects, he suggests.

He also says that evidence suggests that a lack of face-to-face networking could alter the way genes work, upset immune responses, hormone levels, the function of arteries, and influence mental performance.

This, he claims, could increase the risk of health problems as serious as cancer, strokes, heart disease, and dementia.

I have found something to do now, if there’s no-one to have lunch with and that is to go swimming and then spend some time in the jacuzzi afterwards. I can recommend that as a boost to the day.
